First in Line To Promote Hate

Ah, yes.  Nothing like the kind of Christian love that mirrors the loving god we see in the bible, is there?  The god who puts “thou shalt not kill” far down the list of the Ten Commandments and then repeatedly breaks his own commandment, killing hundreds of thousands of people for being what he made them to be?  No wonder belief in the bible produces such wholesome, stand up guys like, oh I don’t know…Charles Worley:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZkcyddD7OpA

Or  hey,  Jesse Lee Peterson (to be fair this man also thanks whites for the hideous crimes against humanity they committed against blacks less than 200 years ago–so clearly the man is insane.), who blames all the troubles of America on “the woman” and the U.S. Government for “allowing” women to vote just as if they should have a say what happens to them or their country too:

And now we reach the best example yet of Christianity at its very finest, Pastor Curtis Knapp, who’s approach to Christianity is much like Hitler’s was:

 http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/05/30/kansas-pastor-calls-on-u-s-government-to-kill-lgbt-people/#.T8eA89yt81I.facebook

The pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca, Kansas says President Barack Obama has gone too far in supporting same sex marriage and it’s time for the U.S. government to begin killing gay men and lesbians.

“Terrorists are dangerous, the economy is a real and present danger,” Pastor Curtis Knapp told his congregation on Sunday. “But there is simply nothing other than the holocaust of the unborn which imperils the safety of our country or places our people in jeopardy as does the leader of the Western world publicly raising his fist at the heavens and declaring that the bedrock institution of society, ordained of God and meant to be protected by the state, is little more than a convention of convenience with the children of Sodom to transform the meaning of something, which is precious to Jesus Christ, and a living picture of his love for the church into a legally protected justification for perversion and a vehicle of hatred aimed directly at that love.”

Knapp went on to read from Leviticus 20: “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death.”

“They should be put to death,” Knapp declared.

(Me interjecting, ah yes, nothing like invoking the bible (or Koran for that matter) whenever it supports personal bigotry or hate.   Cherry picking through the bible–ignoring this verse or that verse but oh here we go, one that says we should kill people we disagree with!)

“‘Oh, so you’re saying we should go out and start killing them, no?’ — I’m saying the government should. They won’t, but they should.”

“You say, ‘Oh, I can’t believe you, you’re horrible. You’re a backwards neanderthal of a person.’ Is that what you’re calling scripture? Is God a neanderthal, backwards in his morality?

(Me interjecting again, YES.  I would say absolutely yes.  God is exactly what his primitive makers were and wanted him to be!)

Is it His word or not?

(Me interjecting–I don’t know, is it?  Says who, exactly?)

If it’s His word, he commanded it. It’s His idea, not mine. And I’m not ashamed of it.”

(Me interjecting again–I would be ashamed of it.  Absolutely I would.  But hey, god also commanded that insolent sons be put before the town and the whole town should stone them to death, and that girls found not to be virgins on their wedding night should be stoned to death.  He commanded a lot of rather horrible things.  Should we also start owning slaves and burning witches (or anyone who seems strange) to death too?)

“He said put them to death,” he continued. “Shall the church drag them in? No, I’m not say that. The church has not been given the power of the sort; the government has. But the government ought to [kill them]. You got a better idea? A better idea than God?”

(Me interjecting again. Yes, how about understanding that if a god exists he made gays too and everything that happens is according to his plan and we need to love and support and encourage each other?  That’s my idea.  Is it better than “god’s?”  I think so.  I also don’t agree that the GOVERNMENT of a secular nation should be the strong arm for religion.  No more separation of church and state, apparently.  What next?   The handicapped?  Jews again?  Blacks?  What other groups do you hate and want disposed of?)

Listen to Knapp’s entire 1-hour sermon on “The Curse of Homosexuality” here.

Calls to the New Hope Baptist Church were not returned by the time of publication.

(End of Article)

What I find most ironic.  Christians accuse atheists of being evil, bad, horrible, godless (and happy to be so, thank you very much) people.  And yet people who claim to have god, are always first in line leading the calvary charge against this minority group or that minority group, their bibles in their hands, usually turned to Leviticus, which has a heck of a lot of really ugly ultimatum kind of commandments, and is only referred to when Christians are needing biblical justification to hate.

Any other time, mostly Christians ignore the Old Testament.  But still it comes in handy whenever a new chance comes along to hate people, doesn’t it?  Then suddenly we hear Leviticus quotes.  Nice, wholesome commandments to kill spoken by this loving god.

But remember, it’s atheists who are bad horrible people.  Atheists.

How funny but I have not heard of one single atheist in the past six months leading the charge to take away human rights from women, or deny equal human rights to gays and lesbians, or suggest that people they don’t agree with be imprisoned, or hey better yet, KILLED by the government.

When I was a Christian this is not how I thought Christianity was supposed to be.  But then again my church never mentioned Leviticus or Timothy or any of these other old testament books where god really spells it out just who the “abominations are,” and how they should be disposed of.   All my church ever did was preach about trying to emulate Jesus.

A MESSAGE TO GIRLS ABOUT RELIGIOUS MEN WHO FEAR YOU by Soraya Chemaly

I found this blog online–I don’t think it can be shared enough:

A Message to Girls About Religious Men Who Fear You

Posted: 05/21/2012 12:31 pm

Dear Girls,

You are powerful beyond words, because you threaten to unravel the control of corrupt men who abuse their authority.

In the United States last week there were people who wouldn’t let boys play a baseball championship final because a girl was on the opposing team. She’d already had to sit out two games because of their demands. Why? Did she, a competitive athlete and a member of her team, chose to? Was she being good and respectful when she acceded to their demands? Why were they not asked to forfeit their games? What messages were sent to her and her teammates? This is not complicated. It sent the wrong messages. Confusing messages. Incoherent messages. You need to know that she should have been allowed to play and not have had to sit out two games. These people, and others like them, all over the world, led exclusively by religious men, are scared of you and will not let you be. You worry them constantly.

If you were not powerful, they would not take you so seriously and they take you very, very seriously. You should, too. You can set the world on fire.

It doesn’t feel this way, I know. If that were true, you think, I would not have to sit out baseball games out of respect for religious beliefs that require my subservience and call it a gift. I would not be turned away from serving God with my brothers. I would not be taught that I’m an evil temptress or the virtue keeper of boys. I would not have virginity wielded as a weapon against me and my worth determined by my womb. I would not be spat on and called a whore by men when I am eight because my arms are bare. I would not be poisoned for going to school. I would not be forced, at the age of 9, to carry twins borne of child torture. I would not have to kill myself to avoid marrying my rapist. If this were true, they would pursue my rapists instead of stoning me for their crimes. I, and thousands others, would not be killed for “honor.”

Girls, these things happen because there are men with power who fear you and want to control you. I know that I have equated relatively benign baseball games with deadly, honor killings but, whereas one is a type of daily, seemingly harmless micro-aggression and the other is a lethal macro-aggression they share the same roots. The basis of both, and escalating actions in between, is the same: To teach you, and all girls subject to these men and their authority, a lesson: “Know your place.” I also know that there are places where girls are marginalized and hurt that are not religious. But all over the world these hypocritical, pious men, in their shamefully obvious wrongness, represent the sharp-edged tip of an iceberg, the visible surface of a deep and vast harm. They employ the full range of their earthly and divine influence to make sure, as early as possible, that you and the boys around you understand what they want your relative roles to be. Where there are patriarchal religions girls, in dramatically varying and extreme degrees, disproportionately suffer. Understand these men for what they are: bullies. Do not internalize what they would have you believe.

Your very existence makes them anxious. And their anxiety is particularly high because you have something no generation of girls has had before — globally connected communities of men and women who support your equality and freedom. Like guns, germs and steel, this transformative technology, which enables me to write to you here, alters geography, changes societies and dismantles systems of control — it makes the world a smaller place and it creates, even if slowly in some places, positive change for girls like you. You see, until now, these men could count on, indeed they could ensure, that you and the women around you were house-bound and isolated. Many of you still are. But now, there are millions and millions and millions people who are thinking about you and challenging these men every single day. You have the speed of light on your side and unless someone permanently turns the lights out, those days are gone. So, although you might feel like you are alone, you are not.

How do you threaten them? A girl, alone? By being able, strong, confident and yes, shameless. You may not “naturally” be interested in domesticity, piety, purity and submission, and they rely on your commitment to those things to order their worlds. Their actions, from one end of the spectrum to the other, are designed to fill you with self-doubt and, ultimately, fear — either bodily or spiritual — because otherwise you, and the young boys around you, will be fully aware of your strength and potential.

Because of this, they single-mindedly focus their attention on you, your body, your clothes, your hair, your abilities, your physical freedom. When their “manners” and “morals” are not universally applicable, but different for boys and girls, you can be sure that this is why. They seek to teach you, subtly, through small slights and gendered expectations, that you are “different,” weak, unworthy, incapable. The sadness is that, in their perception, if you are none of these things, then they are not strong, worthy and capable. This is not an excuse, but an explanation. It’s why they find infinite “benevolent” ways to undermine and disparage you, all in the name of “God’s word.” When that fails, they resort to violence. All over the world, their anxiety is manifest in a spectrum of actions ranging from mild paternalism, respectful of “proper boundaries,” to deadly enforcement of their rules.

Fear is why these men “officially” investigate Girl Scouts while perversely shielding child rapists. It’s why they obsess over your “purity.” It’s why they segregate you in public and private spaces. It’s why they instruct girls and boys that girls’ bodies are either shameful and dirty or sacred and belonging to men. Fear motivates them to teach that you pollute others by your very nature. It makes them intent on making sure you stay home and not be fully engaged in the world. It leads them to sanction marriages of 8-year-olds to old men. It convinces them that rape and its consequences are a “gift from God.” It’s why they empower others to stone you to death and disfigure you with acid.

Even “beating the gay” out of children, especially boys who are “more like” you, is aimed at you. Because if boys are “more like girls,” something these men believe is fundamentally inferior, then you can be “more like boys.” That causes ambiguity and destroys their carefully defined hierarchies and that is intolerable to them.

Fear is why they insist there is something fundamentally wrong with you. Don’t believe them. Fear is why they want you to cover your body. There is nothing wrong with your body, and your body is not to blame. Whether you chose to expose your body or to cover it up, consider the degree to which either choice is defined by a reduction of your character to narrow sexuality by a culture that refuses to hold men accountable for their actions and requires you to either radically display ourself for men’s pleasure or withdraw from the world and be held in reserve. Either way, ask who is defining your worth and by what measure. Fear is why they tell you you are so different from boys. You, and the boys you know, understand that your bodies are different, but that you are far more alike than dissimilar. Threatened, insecure, adult men say otherwise. Don’t give in. Even if you’re quiet. The differences these religious authorities exaggerate are simply pillars of oppression used to teach boys and girls that women’s subjugation is “natural” and “divine.” Reject them and their ideas.

This is hard to do. It requires that you, individually, be brave, strong, determined, fearless and confident. It requires that you demand that the adults around you pay attention and change their behavior. This is even harder.

First, and perhaps the most difficult to understand as a girl, is that women who love you and care for you often enable these men. This is what people say, “It’s not JUST men!” And they are right, women support them, individually and in groups, in ways that have private, public, political and societal consequences. But, make no mistake — although women are the enforcers of rules, they have no real, systemic authority in conservative religious hierarchies, and they know this. Yes, without their support these men could not continue, but until these women are truly free — bodily, economically, physically, politically — and their practical and spiritual salvation is no longer mediated by these very men, they will continue to support them. Enforcing the rules is a rational choice that enables them to survive, the world over, in unjust environments. You scare them too, because you call in to question their own complicity and cause conflict within.

Second, it is confusing that these men say they do what they do for your own good. They talk about respecting you and your dignity. You want to believe them; they have power and authority over you, your parents, your community and your access to God. They are often kind and benevolent and they love you. So, they must be right. But they are not. They demonstrate their own hypocrisy over and over and over again. They say they know what is best. They do not. You do. Don’t believe them when they teach you in hundreds of ways, through sacred text, careful words, cherished traditions, hidden threats and frightening examples, that you are inherently more sinful, base and corrupt, less worthy and in need of constant male guidance. Reject them.

The adults around you may not appear to support you when you take your humanity to its logical religious conclusions. Do not let them off the hook. Do not let them use “tradition” as an excuse or say it “really doesn’t matter.” Do not allow them to get away with asking you to “sit out games,” “be a good girl,” “don’t make a fuss,” and “put something on.” These are micro-aggressions that result in macro-aggressions. Adults often don’t think these things through. Sometimes it’s scary to them, too.

You can say: “There is nothing wrong with me. There is something wrong with you and your world.

Otherwise, when you get older, these same men, the ones who fear and hate you, will continue to undermine you. They will seek to control your body, keep you out of the public sphere, subjugate you in the name of a narrowly defined “family,” create impediments to your equality, shame you at every turn and justify your continued oppression in convoluted ways that defy reason and morality. They will investigate you for being strong, violate you, stone you to death, charge you with witchcraft, punish you in every conceivable way to set an example for … your children.

So, know that you are strong and powerful. Use your reason. Trust your instincts. Seek out those that would support you and, yes, know your place: on the field, in the street, on the bus (in the front), in school, at work and in public office.

You are not alone and you are brighter than the sun.

Not My America!

I am beyond being just angry by what I see happening to my country.  I am livid.  I am ashamed.  I am disgusted.

This is not my America.  How dare they rob me of the nation I know and love?  What gives them the right?  Who has suddenly decided that a twisted sexist and bigoted interpretation of the bible that I do not agree with, suddenly has more say over what our country does and what it stands for, than its own Constitution?

Almost on a daily basis I am seeing something else that makes me feel sick.  Here we have a global environmental crisis, an economic crisis, healthcare crisis, housing crisis, a prison overpopulation crisis…  What is the GOP focusing on?  What is the topic I have to be subjected to every single day?

Alaska.  Arizona.  Wisconsin.  North Carolina.  Kansas.  In one state after another human rights are being decided upon  by not only one religion in a secular nation founded by Deists, but by just one flavor of that one religion.

Which state is next?   Which state is suddenly going to back-slide into bronze age thinking, deciding a fetus is a person before it is even conceived or that  women’s healthcare or mental well-being is now of secondary importance to the mass production and harvesting of potentially viable eggs or fetuses?  The new message here; women have rights only to a  point, and the Religious Right get to decide on a daily basis what rights women can or cannot have!

Now women can’t even…buy contraceptives if the pharmacist just happens to have a problem with population control in an already very overcrowded world where people die of starvation every single day because there’s not enough food?  You have got to be kidding me!

So then, following that same line of thinking, does this mean stores can deny cigarettes to smokers if the guy behind the counter doesn’t smoke or doesn’t believe in smoking, or alcohol if he thinks drinking goes against God?  Should bank tellers suddenly have the right to not give people with fancy clothes or fancy cars money because it is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich person to get into heaven?

When does it end?  Or is this preferential treatment shown only to women?  Somehow because women have wombs they can become at any given time, breeding stock whenever a pharmacist decides its god’s will?

What the hell?

Now all of a sudden human rights are a privilege for some, not all.  Gay couples in love have to wait on pins and needles, hoping this time maybe the majority will finally vote that yes they may have the same rights as everyone else, while meanwhile heterosexual couples can marry any time they wish and that right is not subjected to a majority vote.

Since when should anyone’s basic human rights be subject to a majority vote?   If that’s the case then why aren’t traditional marriages subject to a majority vote?  Shouldn’t gays have the right to vote every four years if they think straight couples should be allowed to marry?

Protecting the sanctity of marriage–that’s the Religious Right’s war cry.  Yes, and we see so much of that among straight couples.  Gay marriage just isn’t natural the Right Wing claims.  Yes, and neither is riding in cars, flying in airplanes, drinking carbonated beverages, wearing contact lenses, false teeth or glasses. Should we do away with all these other things too because they’re not “natural?”

The bible is a book, and unproven–a book filled with errors and contradictions.  Bats are birds in the bible, unicorns exist, and donkeys talk, and yet, the bible should have equal or more authority over citizens of this country (regardless of their beliefs), than the United States Constitution???

Any divine inspiration the bible has is here say only.  I could say that J.R.R. Tolkien was divinely inspired and Lord Of The Rings is the one true word of god.  Does that make it true?

How come it is that the very same people who hold aloft the bible and point to the bits that says women should not have authority over men or gays are an abomination, can completely ignore the parts of the bible that say you should stone to death your daughter if she isn’t a virgin on her wedding night or stone to death your son in front of the whole town for being insolent?  Who are they to decide what is and what should not to be taken seriously in the bible?

This is not Christianity.  The Religious Right claim to speak for Jesus, claim to represent Jesus.  But what they represent is what they believe in.  Just like Hitler found bits in the bible to justify his actions, so does the Right Wing fundamentalist Christians find juicy little morsels to pick out of the muck that most of the bible is and say “Here!  Proof God hates gays!”

Anyone can at any time pick through the bible and find something there to support whatever opinion they want to have supported.  The bible says the handicapped or physically imperfect should not be allowed in god’s temple too.   And women should not wear braids or jewelry, or cloth of mixed material.

I’m sorry, but how stupid can we get?  What must the rest of the world think of us?  It’s embarrassing.

This is not the America I grew up loving and believing in.  This is obscene and ugly and it needs to be stopped.  It doesn’t belong here.  Not here, the home of the free.

Your Equal Rights? Majority Vote Shall Decide!

I am disgusted and angered at North Carolina and any other State that makes equal human rights for all, subject to a majority vote.   Do straight people have to wait and hope that a majority of the population all agree that they should be able to marry?  No.   So why do gays?  Why do some people have to depend on other people agreeing what their rights should be, while some of us do not?   I thought this was America.  Bad enough that women in this day and age still have to battle every four years to hold on to their right to control their own body.  But to say some Americans have the right to express their love for each other through marriage, and some do not–how absurd.

The “sanctity of marriage” only applies to people who believe in a god.  And as usual, whenever god or religion is added to the mix we get hatred, intolerance, and a complete disregard for the pursuit of happiness for anyone who isn’t the same as we are.

I wrote this story this morning.  Homosexuality is as natural to human beings as it is to any other warm blooded species on this planet.  The very fact some human beings are born with a preference for their own gender proves this is natural because human beings, despite how artificial we’ve made our world, are still very much a part of the natural world.

I just thought–write a story to illustrate this same kind of discrimination toward people born “different” in a more obvious way–a way they obviously can’t help and don’t have any choice about.  Does this scenario seem cruel, unfair and absurd?  Well I know several gay people.  This is not a lifestyle choice.  This is not a choice at all.  It is who they are; how they were born.  For them it is as natural as being straight is for us.  Can a straight person suddenly decide not to be straight anymore?  Then how is it fair to treat gays like simply being who they are is somehow a choice?

Anyway, here’s the story:

A whisper of cool air.  I turned my head to see Janie cracking her window.  The old black van was fearsome hot in the blistering sun, the fabric of the front seat sticking to my thighs.  I too, put a hand to the crank and let in some air.  But it was only the van’s speed that made it seem cool.  When I leaned my cheek close to the open air, it was warm.  Easy Bake Oven warm.

“Are we there yet?” Ben asked from the back seat.  I turned to see his flushed face.  He was twisting where he sat, clearly uncomfortable.  Beside him his twin Charlie sat with his eyes closed, his cheek resting on Ben’s shoulder.  Being just twelve, the two boys had little patience for long drives, let alone in the summer heat.

“Almost.”  Janie.flipped on her turn signal.  I could see the kids in the stopped car next to us.  They were bouncing up and down in their seats, obviously headed for the same destination as we.

“It’ll be packed,” Janie said.

“At this point I don’t care!” I returned.  I kept my eye on my two little brothers.  Their life had not been easy; every day I felt more protective of them.  When at last the car crunched its way into the gravel parking lot beside the public pool, I saw Ben give Charlie a poke.  The slightly smaller boy awoke with a jolt, looked to where Ben was pointing and grinned.  As if on cue both boys seized their towels.

Getting out of the car was always awkward, but today it seemed my two little brothers had wings.  I laughed at Charlie when he suddenly lost a flip flop in his haste to get in line.   Ben at once stopped, and lowered himself just a bit so his brother could slip it back on.

The kids in front and behind looked curiously at my brothers.  Ben stuck out his tongue.  He was used to it.  Charlie was luckily turned in such a way that very often he didn’t get to see.   They were conjoined twins, both sharing one heart.  It was possible when they were older and stronger they might be separated; both twins were on the waiting list for a heart.

I came first to the ticket window.   “Three!” I sang out.  From behind the fence I could see the sunlight on the water, the play of its rays across the cool blue surface.  It was as packed as Janie predicted.  In some places kids were shoulder to shoulder.  Behind me I felt Ben pressing against me in his eagerness.  It was almost a hundred degrees and it was Wisconsin.  The heat itself turned to sweat beneath our clothes.

The balding man behind the window eyed my two brothers.   I saw his eyes fix on the place where the two boys’ ribcages merged together.  A look of disgust raised his upper lip.   “You can go in,” he said curtly.  “But not them.  They’re not… natural.”

I felt a chill in that horrible heat.  Starting at the back of my neck it shot straight through my stomach.  “What?”  I stared at the man, not believing what I’d just heard.

“Sam,” Janie said softly beside me.  “Let’s go.”

“No way!”  I put myself between my brothers and the man’s cruel scrutiny.  “What is your problem?  Who are you to tell us we can’t go in?”

“YOU can,” the man barked.  “But not them.  Not them!   Holy shit, little girl, they’re unnatural.  I don’t want them in the water with my kids.  I don’t want the other kids seeing that!”

I took a step back, put my hands on my hips.  “Look,” I said, trying to suppress the anger in my voice.  I felt my body trembling: rage took me then.  I could hardly form words.  “This is America.  We are Americans.  My brothers have just as much right to go in that pool as anyone else!”

The man glared at me.  A slow cruel smile bent his lips.  He closed the window, came out of his chair; as I watched he came through the doorway to where we stood.  With a rigid set to his shoulders he went to the metal gate and thumbed it open.   “Ok!” he snarled.  “Right!”   I let out a yelp as he grabbed my arm, pushed me aside.  Then his hard hands caught Ben and Charlie by the shoulders.  With rough jerks of his arms he pulled the two boys through the gate, into the hard brightness of the sun.

A silence fell as the kids in the water stopped splashing, as the kids playing in the puddles beside the pool looked up.  Even the boy on the diving board stopped and looked down.  Suddenly everyone was looking at my little brothers as beside Ben, Charlie began to cry.

“Everyone!”  the big man shouted.  “This is America…that means we get a vote!   Who here’s in favor of these two freaks getting in the water with you?”

I stood rooted to the spot. Not a single kid raised their hands.   They stared at the man who they knew owned the pool, his loathing and hatred twisting his face, and not a kid raised their hand.  Even the lifeguards at their various stations were dumbstruck; too afraid of losing their jobs to make a sound.

Finally I found my voice.  “Come on, guys.”  I bit hard on each word.  “We don’t need their stupid pool.  There’s the lake, just down the road and I’m betting no one’s peed in it, either!”

I took Charlie’s hand.  He lurched beside me, hiding his face against my arm.  We turned away from the sight of the water, but then had to stop.  I saw Ben still standing with hope on his face, gazing at the other kids he ached to play with, the cool water he craved.

“Please,” I heard him whisper.

I looked at the adult who had done his best to humiliate my brothers.   He was grinning now, and with gestures, getting many of the other kids to laugh.

“Come on, Ben,” I said gently.  With a look of pain and confusion, my little brother turned away.

HATE Like THIS Is Destroying America

http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/article/2012/05/05/wheres-your-shame-woman

Where’s your shame, Jesse Lee Peterson?

I guess I should be glad you speak like you’ve had very little educating.   Truly you are exactly the right person to represent people like you.  Do you have a white sheet you wear?  Burn any crosses lately?   And no, I’m not exaggerating.  If you walk like a duck and quack like a duck…

First they hate Muslims, then they hate gays.  Now it’s women.  The new “in” people to hate are women.  None of the ills of this nation would be happening if not for women being allowed to run wild.  We should have shame, like we did in the “good ol days.”  Shame of our bodies.  Shame of our own intelligence.  Shame to talk about having sex or enjoying sex or buying products to prevent us from having unwanted pregnancies. In society we shouldn’t dare try to reach our full potential, or to lead, or wield any power.  We should be docile, meek, trusting of the greater God-bestowed wisdom and strength possessed by men.

Clearly this grandson of oppressed ancestors has become blinded by his religion inspired bigotry.  But it demonstrates what religion does, and especially what patriarchal religion teaches, about women.   In actuality this man is doing nothing more than expressing what is written in the Christian bible.  If more people actually read the book they hold above their heads, they would know this.   This is what God has ordained.  Women should be silent in church, women should not have positions of authority over men, women should not be allowed to teach men.

Can I throw up now?

It might come as a surprise to some, but women are also human beings, and contrary to what the good book of myths written by men bent on subjugating women, we were not put on this earth merely to serve men or help men or be baby machines.    We are not here for men to decide what to “allow” or permit.  Our human rights are not decided by the majority vote–or should not be.  We are free thinking human beings, the same you who think you have the right to lord over us.

Sex takes two people.   What about all the men having sex out of wedlock?  Do we have a word for them?  Let’s see.  Women who do are called sluts and whores…what is the term we should use to describe men who do the same thing?  IS there a term?

Sorry, but idiots like Mr. Petersson make me wish all the harder that the blight of bigotry and hate be eradicated from the face of the planet.  And soon.  If anything is harming our nation and our society, it is these close minded intolerant spreaders of this kind of poison who can’t feel good about themselves or superior unless they have someone else to step on and mock, to belittle and to hate.

People who judge others, should first look in the mirror.   People like this man have no business leading anyone.

But hey, it does bode well for the future success of the Democratic Party.

Religion in the Workplace

A recent blogcast put out by The Thinking Atheist.  It’s over an hour, but very good stuff.  For those of you who would like to have some understanding how it feels to be an atheist.  The host describes very well his process of going from a believer to unbelief.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FElstT-s_YM&feature=g-all-u

Actually, after listening about 50 minutes the topic does get into the fact there is no archeological evidence or evidence at all of any of the stories in the bible.  And this podcast was recorded last weeks so…fairly new.

Another great link to learning more about Evolution.  This link provides some of the best vids out there on the subject:

Why Are Atheists “The Enemy?”

I was just reading/listening to Teresa Macbain’s story–

http://www.npr.org/2012/04/30/151681248/from-minister-to-atheist-a-story-of-losing-faith

Religion so often does the opposite of what believers think.  It makes people intolerant.  Why does Teresa’s community that she gave guidance and counseling and encouragement and support to, turn on her this way and treat her like an enemy?  Do Christians view Jews as the enemy?  Or Buddhists?  Or anyone who happens to have faith in something else?   Then why are atheists the enemy?  And especially atheists who were previously Christians?

Tell you what, listening to Teresa’s story…struck a chord with me.  I haven’t become an enemy like she has.  I am not seen as a betrayer of the faith as she is.  But I have lost friends since I made it clear I can’t believe anymore.   I also find myself suddenly having to walk on eggshells worrying how much should I exult in this new feeling of freedom?  How much singing out and speaking out and shouting out with joy can I do before I am admonished for offending someone?

Really, all it takes to offend a Christian is to say the words “there’s no such thing as god.”  Say those words and they are offended, personally and deeply offended.

It’s not meant to be an offense.  If I went 40 years of my life thinking I have a horrible singing voice and always being ashamed to sing, afraid to sing…and then one day I’m told by a voice teacher I have a really great range and wonderful potential as a singer, I’m going to want to tell people.    The same is true if I go my whole life believing in something that makes me feel I can’t ever be good enough, that I was born corrupt and I need to do this and this and this to be good or to be loved…and then one day I find out it’s all a lie and I was born into this world exactly right and exactly as nature meant me to be–I would want to sing that news from the rooftops!  I’d want to  tell my friends, my family, people I care about whom I still see struggling in the dark.   And yet…it offends people.

No Christian, especially not the ones who live for Jesus and give their whole life’s work to serving Jesus like Ms. Macbain, want or ask to lose their faith.   It’s not a road believers take intentionally.  It’s a path they stumble on.

We’re not supposed to ask questions.  I know a friend who was kicked out of her church for asking too many questions.  Why is that?  If Christianity is true–if any religion is true–it should be able to withstand any questions put to it.  It should  not shy away from the new discoveries of science either, but rather welcome those discoveries as further proof of its unshakable truth.

Instead when I asked questions, the kind of questions that put parts of the bible or god’s actions or Jesus’ actions, into doubt, I was given the same pat answers: “we are finite beings; how can we possibly understand god?”  Or, “god works in mysterious ways.”  Or, “have faith.  God will reveal this to you in time.”

And then that time never comes.

I look at the bible and I wonder, how can this loving god that the Christians believe in order little children dashed to pieces or pregnant mother’s bellies cut open with swords?   How can this just and merciful god order a man stoned to death for picking up sticks on the Sabbath or…allow his followers to teach that women are worth only half as much as men and should be silent, should not wear jewelry or braided hair or… speak aloud in church, and daughters can be sold into slavery.

These are the questions that catch us unaware.  We are like everyone else, Christians going along with what we’re told, assuming someone bothered to do the research and confirm it’s all true.  We nod our heads and sing our songs and high-light the appropriate verses in the bible.   But then one day someone points out something in the bible we didn’t know was there.  Or maybe one day it suddenly dawns on us that it makes no sense that Satan would hate the people who deny god, his enemy, and would want to punish them.    Or that god would punish Adam and Eve so severely for simply being ignorant, for making a mistake, and not just them but all of humanity.

Atheists are not the enemy of anyone.  Atheists simply do not believe in the supernatural–and have lately been brought to the point that we aren’t so silent about it anymore after having to hear politicians who should know better declare our country a “Christian nation” when it’s not, or for that matter have  Christianity shoved in our face wherever we turn.  How does this make us bad people worthy of hate?  How does this make someone like Teresa Macbain worthy of being shunned by the very community she served and helped for years?

Once upon a time God created himself an enemy.  I’m not sure why.  A lot of pain and suffering would have been avoided if he hadn’t.   But he made Satan and then punished Satan for being made.  Sometimes I feel like Christians want to have an enemy too.  So they hunt down people who dare to not agree, and attack them, call them ignorant or evil–arrogantly tell them they’re going to hell–basically punish them for daring to be, just like gays, true to who and what they are.

God Made His Own Enemy

Christians want to claim the biblical god is omniscient.   As in, he sees past, present and future.   What this tells me, and why I think it makes him a malignant, sadistic monster–

Before he made Lucifer he knew Lucifer would become Satan, and he knew some of his angels would follow Satan, and yet he made Lucifer anyway.  He made his own enemy, knowing ahead of time he was doing it.  He even made hell as a place to put his enemy in.  This tells me Satan is not really God’s enemy but working for God, serving some purpose for God–an enemy created for a reason.

We are supposed to hate and oppose Satan.  And yet God put Satan here–God created Satan.  Why?  To trip us up?  To cause us to fall and thus be then at God’s mercy generation after generation, each generation inheriting the sin of doing something God set us up to do in the first place knowing ahead of time we’d do it–making Satan and putting us in close proximity to Satan so for sure we’d do it?

Before God made Adam and Eve he knew where Satan was, knew what Satan would do, knew what his newborn and ignorant human creations would do should they come face to face with Satan.  Knowing this, God did it anyway.  He put those child-like gullible naive humans in close proximity with the enemy he, God, had created, knowing what would happen before it did.

And as he knew and planned for it to, it did happen.  Then God punished his creation for doing what he put them in close proximity to Satan to do, just as he punished Lucifer for doing what he had been made to do.

The first batch of humans God made became so corrupt God decided to send a flood to purge the earth of the corruption and start over again?  If God knows the future he knew before he made Adam and Eve that the first batch of humans would be too corrupt, and yet he made them anyway, deliberately, and then regretted making them.  As if a being who can see the future could “regret” anything.   Actually a mass genocide was part of God’s divine plan.  He absolutely intended for his first batch of humans to be corrupt so he could destroy not only all human life, but all life on the planet and start over.

Why do this?  Why not make humans right in the first place?  What did making a corrupt first batch of humans, and then destroying them and starting over, accomplish?   What other “good” did sparing Noah’s family but killing all other life accomplish?  Unless this God specifically enjoys genocide–enjoys torturing and killing his creations.

All those animals and sea-life that died and insect life that died…were they corrupt?  Why did they have to die?  Could they help it that they were born at the same time as a bunch of humans God made knowing they’d become corrupt?  Why flood the earth?  Why wipe out everything?  If God is all powerful he could have simply caused all the humans he deliberately made knowing he’d end up killing them, to drop dead from heart attacks.    Or just with a thought–make them all cease to exist.  Why the flood?  Why the mass genocide of all life, not just human life?   And how can a omniscient God “regret” anything?   It was all a part of his plan–his divine plan.  Which means his plan is perfect.

I could go on with this but I won’t.  My point is the creator of evil made evil for a reason.  The first batch of humans would not have been corrupt at all if Lucifer had never been made.  And yet he was made.  God made his own enemy.  God put dumb humans in close proximity with his enemy knowing what would happen.   God made humans knowing very soon he’d have to purge the earth–kill all life–because those humans would be corrupt.

How can it be called free will when we are made by a creator who wants us to fail?  Who put his enemy on this earth to not only make us fail, but to force us to have to grovel and beg for salvation?   How can it be free will when God knows before he makes us, which of us are destined for heaven or hell?   Do we who are destined for hell have any way to change his mind?  Change the perfect divine plan?   Over the last 30 years while I worked and struggled to believe something illogical, love a God despite what the bible told me about him, God knew up there in heaven–knew all my struggling was in vain and that in the end I would roast in hell.  Even though I spend half my life trying to be good enough to be one of his saved.

It’s like putting a carrot in front of a starving horse and saying “if you pull this plow another foot you’ll get this reward,” so the horse pulls hard, body trembling, one foot and then another, but always that carrot is swinging just out of reach…until one day the horse just gives up and drops in his traces; then the last words he hears before his farmer shoots him in the head is, “I always knew you’d fail me.”

Mary WHO??? What the First Christians Believed…

http://www.christianitydisproved.com/bible/marcion-of-sinope.html

Who was Marcion? What was Marcionism? Why was he so important in the development of the church in the Second Century?

Who was Marcion?

Marcion: The Gospel of the Alien GodMarcion: The Gospel of the Alien God

Marcion of Sinope was born around 85-100 CE, in the region of Pontus on the Black Sea.1 According to Hippolytus, Marcion’s father was a bishop in Sinope; the young Marcion likely attended his church and became familiar with the Christian scriptures.2 As time progressed Marcion became an educated man, who prospered as a ship-master/shipowner.3 His familial relationships did not share the same prosperous fate as his career; tradition has it that Marcion’s father excommunicated him in Sinope for seducing a young virgin, what is more likely, is that he was excommunicated for his false teachings in relation to his father’s Christianity.4 Marcion had embraced a radical Paulinist theology (see ‘What was Marcionism?’ below), we don’t know how far developed this theology was at the time of his excommunication, but we do know that it was fully developed by 144 CE.5

Undeterred by his excommunication, Marcion travelled throughout Asia Minor seeking recognition for his theology; he was rebuffed by the church leaders of Ephesus, Smyrna and Hierapolis.6 It was probably around this time that Marcion infamously encountered Polycarp and his barbed retort, “I recognize you as the first born of Satan.”7

Undeterred by his rejection in Asia Minor, Marcion travelled to Rome on his own ship with grand plans in mind, upon arrival around 137-139 CE, he donated 200,000 sesterces to the proto-orthodox church.8 It appears that Marcion learnt from his experiences in Asia Minor, rather than submitting his theology to the church in Rome straight away, he probably sequestered himself to five years of private study, from around 139-144 CE.9 At the end of this period, Marcion emerged with Marcionism’s foundational documents; the Marcionite Bible and its commentary the Antitheses.10 He gathered the Roman community, submitted his theology and demanded a verdict from the presbyters in 144 CE.11 There can be no doubt that this action unearths Marcion’s mindset; he saw himself as the literary saviour of the proto-orthodox church, he would have expected the community to read his writings and see the error of their ways. For the third notable time, Marcion and his theology were rejected, he was expelled from the community, branded as a heretic and had his 200,000 sesterces refunded.12

Undeterred by his rejection in Rome, Marcion started his own church; if the proto-orthodox would not propagate his theology, then he would do it himself. The ensuing results were spectacular, by the year 150 CE Justin Martyr wrote: “And there is Marcion, a man of Pontus, who is even at this day alive … And he, by the aid of the devils, has caused many of every nation to speak blasphemies…”13 Tertullian echoed these sentiments: “… [Marcionism] has filled the whole world…”14 as did Epiphanius, “The sect is still to be found even now in Rome and Italy, Egypt and Palestine, Arabia and Syria, Cyprus and the Thebaid – in Persia too, moreover and other places.”15 Marcion’s church was a formidable rival to the proto-orthodox; Marcion lived no more than 15 years after his Roman expulsion, but his efforts influenced Christendom for centuries.16 According to Harnack, “No other religious personality in antiquity after Paul and before Augustine can rival him in significance.”17

What else do we know about Marcion the man? It is clear that Marcion was a great organizer that he was: energetic, intelligent, stubborn, an idealistic reformer, naive, self assured, single-minded, forcible, and resilient, a visionary, sincere, pragmatic, serious-minded and possessed strong convictions.18 He had an aversion to philosophy but was potentially influenced by the ‘problem of evil’ in his younger days, he rejected allegorical interpretation and was not significantly influenced by the Gnostic Cerdo; if he was influenced at all.19 He was an ascetic, a modalist, a dualist, a docetist, a biblical theologian, a biblical literalist, a textual critic/restorer, as well as a man that loved his enemies and embraced the Beatitudes.20 It is highly unlikely that Marcion was a charlatan; he never claimed a religious revelation, he never claimed to have received his scriptures supernaturally and he never claimed authority for himself.21 He could easily have claimed these things; charlatans have done so both before and after him with lasting effects.22 No, Marcion was a genuine believer, he saw himself as a student of Paul, simply following in the apostle’s footsteps.23

What was Marcionism?

Marcionism rested upon two foundational assumptions.24 The first assumption was based upon Paul’s writings in Galatians:

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel – not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are confusing you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed! As we have said before, so now I repeat, if anyone proclaims to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let that one be accursed! … For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.25

Marcion interpreted Paul‘s words literally, there was only one gospel not four (or more) and it was the gospel that Paul had received personally from Jesus Christ. The second assumption arose from Marcion’s observation that the Old Testament God was starkly different from Jesus. According to Tertullian, Marcion compared Old Testament verses like:26

He [Elisha] went up from there to Bethel; and while he was going up on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, “Go away, baldhead! Go away, baldhead!” When he turned around and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two she-bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.27

With Jesus‘ loving words toward children:

People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it. But Jesus called for them and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs”.28

From such verses Marcion made the relatively logical conclusion, that the God of the Old Testament; the creator-God, was different to the good-God who was the father of Jesus Christ. The creator-God was: inferior and previously ignorant of the good-God, the creator of the physical world, the God of the Jews, in opposition to the good-God, the law-giver, a judge, just, petty, cruel, finite, warlike, jealous, blood-thirsty, severe, fierce, hostile to Christ, responsible for procreation and all other evils of the flesh.29 In stark contrast, the good God was: the God of Marcionism, superior to the creator-God, in opposition to the creator-God, separate from the universe, loving, good, righteous, giving, kind and previously unknown; a stranger/alien from the third heaven.30 The good-God had never produced any flesh, and he was seeking to purchase/steal people from the creator-God to his own heaven through Christ the redeemer.31 Marcion rejected the creator-God, the Old Testament and its prophets; the law and its creator-God were viewed in opposition to the gospel and the good-God.32

In summary, Marcionism was foundationally based upon Paul‘s one gospel and the rejection of the Old Testament, its law and creator-God, in favour of the new good-God.

From this foundation, the Marcionite conspiracy theory was born; Judaism had corrupted the true gospel/epistles throughout the entire apostolic age.33 Marcion therefore would allow no connection between the gospel/epistles; “…anything that purports to be Christian and yet exhibits a connection with the Old Testament is false and forged.34 To rectify this alleged travesty, Marcion set about ‘restoring’ the Pauline texts, excising them to form the first closed canon; the Marcionite Bible which accompanied the Antitheses.35 The excised Bible contained one unnamed ‘authentic’ gospel (Luke), and the epistles: Galatians, Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Romans, Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon, Philippians and parts of the Epistle to the Laodiceans.36 The proto-orthodox destroyed this Bible along with the Antitheses but we can deduce Marcionite teachings from the anti-heretical works that the texts spawned.

On Christ, Marcion denied the virgin birth, instead proposing that Christ had emerged from heaven in 29 CE as the son of the good-God; a stranger to the creator-God.37 Christ didn‘t have a normal physical body but he was not a phantom, he still suffered.38 The purpose of Christ‘s visit was to purchase mankind from the creator-God for the good-God, with Christ‘s blood.39 This act displayed the innate goodness of the good-God, the new reality was love.40 Marcionites were ‘saved’ by faith in Christ, not by observing the creator-God‘s law which Christ abolished.

On Judaism, Marcion saw the Old Testament as a book of literal history; he rejected it but did not see it as a book of lies.41 He believed that the Jewish Messiah was yet to arrive.42

Much emphasis was placed on newness within Marcionism. Marcionites constantly referred to Jesus’ saying:43

And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.44

Contrary to the proto-orthodox, Marcionites held that there was no physical resurrection of the dead. They believed that the soul would be saved but that the body, the creation of the creator-God, would be destroyed.45

Marcionites held to the Pauline teaching that, “…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”46 As such, people that rejected Christ were to be punished on judgment day. Since the good-God couldn‘t possibly have his own hell, non-believers would simply be cast away to the creator-God, who does have his own hell and will burn them with fire.47

Marriage was not allowed by Marcion, it was viewed as a corruption. Since the creator-God ordained marriage, the Marcionites believed that they were distressing him by avoiding it; this was a positive thing for they viewed themselves in opposition to the creator-God.48 Sex was prohibited for it engaged the sinful flesh, an additional bonus was that this too supposedly bothered the creator-God.49 This teaching had an enormously negative effect upon the movement‘s demographics; besides the ascetic deterrent, they couldn‘t expand the religious base by indoctrinating children, they had to continually recruit new members.50

Marcionites had special dietary restrictions, they were not allowed to eat meat with the exception of fish and they were not permitted to drink wine.51 Food intake was to be minimized alongside fasting, which was also conducted to spite the creator-God.52 Marcionites also practiced the Eucharist.53

Baptism was practiced, it is possible that women were allowed to conduct the ritual and that it was allowed more than once.54

Whilst Marcion rejected the Old Testament prophets, it is possible that he did not reject the concept of prophecy itself.55

It also appears that Marcionites died for their beliefs in significant numbers; being prepared for martyrdom was encouraged.56

Whilst many of Marcion‘s teachings were irrational by modern standards, there was one teaching that was clearly unethical; it involved the damnation of Abel and Enoch amongst others. It was commonly held in Marcion‘s time that Jesus had descended to Hades, to redeem prior generations.57 Judaism ‘back-sliders’/non-adherents were saved including Cain, Esau, Abiram, Korah and Dathan.58 But, ‘ethical’ people like Abel, Enoch, Abraham, Moses and David were not, for they had followed the creator-God.59 This teaching was clearly immoral; to reward a murderer such as Cain, yet condemn Abel to an eternity of fire was an ethical affront to justice.

Marcionite teachings were propagated within Marcionite churches.60 Their church structure paralleled that of the proto-orthodox involving bishops, elders and catechumens and they observed similar religious events.61 Their services were open to the public; pagans included.62 They had no clear cut doctrinal system which allowed diversity from the beginning, Marcionism would evolve with time; most notably with Apelles.63

Why was he so important in the development of the church in the Second Century?

The success of Marcion and his Marcionite church threatened the proto-orthodox: “Already in the year A.D. 150 Justin could say that his influence extended all over the Empire. A real rival to the growing Catholic Church had sprung into being, and for a few years it must actually have seemed possible that the Marcionite church would become the dominant church.”64 This spurred the proto-orthodox into action, three major developments took place: (1) The proto-orthodox were motivated to clarify their ecclesiastical doctrines; (2) They were forced to create their own Biblical canon, and; (3) They were motivated to include Paul in the newly formed canon. These developments will be analysed in turn.

Prior to Marcion’s emergence, the proto-orthodox lacked conclusive ecclesiastical doctrines; there was no canon besides the Old Testament, there was a lack of meaningful creeds, there were competing interpretations of tradition, there was a reliance on “apostolic men” like Polycarp, and the episcopate was still developing its authority.65 Marcion‘s theological assault spurred them into action; anti-heretical counter literature was profusely written by the likes of Irenaeus and Tertullian forging ecclesiastical doctrines.66 The Old Roman Creed was reiterated to specify the belief, that the creator-God was the Father of Jesus Christ, and the need for their own canon was identified.67

Marcion‘s greatest contribution to the development of the second century church was the Marcionite canon; it was the catalyst and prototype for the proto-orthodox‘s canon.68 Prior to Marcion‘s emergence, Christendom had employed a vast array of literature ranging from the accepted Old Testament, to various gospels, apocalyptic works, epistles and letters.69 There was no consensus on which texts where authoritative, it depended on which church you visited.70 Marcion led the way on enforcing consensus and the proto-orthodox followed suit: It cannot have been twenty years later when authoritative bishops in Asia Minor and Rome proceeded to set in opposition to Marcion‘s Bible a collection that was also in two parts and to designate it as the apostolic catholic New Testament. This work, created in imitation and under the impact of Marcion‘s creation, was hardly felt to be an odd innovation, because the four Gospels had already been in use in those churches for more than a generation.71 Whilst the proto-orthodox would have inevitably developed their own canon, Marcion accelerated the process.72

Finally, the contents of the proto-orthodox canon were influenced by Marcion; specifically the inclusion of Paul‘s writings. Prior to Marcion, Paul had progressively been on the outer of proto-orthodox Christianity; appreciation for his “gospel” had been waning.73 In the words of E.C. Blackman, “It may be that but for Marcion the Catholic Church might have left Paul‘s writings out of its canon, and have left the Apostle with no greater authority than the Apostolic Fathers.”74 Ironically, it seems like Paul‘s real saviour was Marcion.

God is Great, God is Good?

“Thou Shalt Not Kill.”    Well, after all.  It’s so important to God that it doesn’t even rank among the top 5 of the Ten Commandments.

How Many Satan Has Killed Compared To God:

Please note!  The below is copied from:

http://dwindlinginunbelief.blogspot.com/2006/08/who-has-killed-more-satan-or-god.html

In a previous post, I counted the number of people that were killed by God in the Bible. I came up with 2,476,633, which, of course, greatly underestimates God’s total death toll, since it only includes those killings for which specific numbers are given. No attempt was made to include the victims of Noah’s flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, or the many plagues, famines, fiery serpents, etc., with which the good book is filled. Still, 2 million is a respectable number even for world class killers.
But how does this compare with Satan? How many did he kill in the Bible?
Well I can only find ten, and even these he shares with God, since God allowed him to do it as a part of a bet. I’m talking about the seven sons and three daughters of Job.

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job … And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD … put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house…And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. — Job 1:1-19

So it seems that both Satan and God share the blame (or the credit) for these killings. If so, then the tally would be:

killings
God 2,476,633
Satan 10

Update
I’ve tried to assign numbers to the un-numbered killings in the Bible. You can see the detailed list here.
The results were even more lopsided: 25 million (plus or minus a few million) for God; 60 for Satan.

numbered killings estimated total killings
God 2,476,633 25 million
Satan 10 60

Much more information about God’s killings, with a chapter on each of the 135 killing events, can be found int the book:

Babylon Is Fallen

“And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.” (Isaiah 21:9)

Comment

Many soldiers have used Bible verses to justify horrific destruction against their enemy. Such beliefs can comfort the minds of men to do virtually any kind of atrocity against men, women, and children of the enemy. The Crusaders of the 12th century, slaughtered or tortured anyone who stood in their way. The Bible’s words gave them their justification.

Even today, our government, military and religious leaders judge wars as “moral” based on Biblical reasoning. Fighting men feel, not only comforted, but glorious in their actions against the destruction of fellow human beings. In the Gulf War, for example, an F-16 fighter/bomber had “Isaiah 21:9” written on its bombs.

David Slaughters Them

“And he brought out the people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes…” (I Chronicles 20:3)

Comment

Chapters 17-19 (171819) tells us that David killed 22,000 Syrians and that Abishai killed 18,000 Edomites. No one expresses shame at such slaughters.

Here in 20:3, we have David, counted as a great leader of the Israelites, slaughtering captives after the cessation of hostilities. From what high moral ground should we admire this action?

Decapitate Them!

“And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. And the LORD said unto Moses, ‘Take all the heads of the people and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.'” (Numbers 25:3-4)

Comment

Those who worshipped other gods must die, and even more horribly, their heads displayed publicly. Either God never said anything so cruel, or we truly live in a cursed universe, ruled by a maniac Supreme Being.

Millions of people, today, switch their religions. If God had any interest in this ongoing process, there appears no evidence of this.

Gideon Slaughters

“And Gideon said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers” (Judges 8:7)

“Now Zebah and Zalmunna were Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.” (Judges 8:10)

Comment

The Gideon Society places Bibles into motels and hotels across America. One would assume Gideon lived as a person of exemplary character and great worth to have a worldwide society named after him. Below describes some of Gideon’s accomplishments:

  • Gideon slaughtered thousands in battle by plotting with the “Lord” to use Treachery.
  • Gideon murdered thousands more for worshipping “false Gods.”
  • Gideon tortured and killed still more for daring to taunt him.
  • Gideon plundered the bodies of his victims (to fashion a jeweled priestly vestment).
  • Gideon fathered an offspring who killed 69 of his stepbrothers.

Read the story of Gideon in Judges, chapters thru 6-9 ( 6789). The tale of Gideon describes just one of the many horror stories in the Bible, a book that glorifies behavior abysmal to modern society. The clergy and leaders have hoodwinked millions of people about the stories in the Bible. Don’t let others decide for yourself.

God Buries Them Alive

“And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.” (Numbers 16:32-35)

Comment

Moses relays a sadistic threat that asks us to believe that God punishes members of families, including innocent infants. And again we have the Satanic fire coming from God burning his creations.

God Kills The Firstborns!

“And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.” (Exodus 12:29-30)

If we believe every word in the Bible as coming from God, then it stands to reason that the violent actions from the God described in Exodus cannot give us a moral comparison to live our lives in a peaceful world.

If one wishes to believe that God possess love for His creations, then the killing of innocent children cannot possibly come from God, and therefore, these verses from the Bible must have come elsewhere. But note that if one takes the Bible’s words as absolute truth, then not only did God smote the firstborn children, but all firstborn regardless of age. This means all firstborn teenagers, firstborn men & women, firstborn octogenarians, and even all firstborn cows and bulls. Regardless of how much love, charity, or goodness they may have imparted to the world, if they had the unfortunate luck to have first passed through their mother’s vagina in the land of Egypt, according to the Bible, God killed them!

God Sends Pestilence

“Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel…” (I Chronicles 21:12)

“So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.” (I Chronicles 21:14)

Comment

David made an offense against God in taking a census of the people, so God gave David a choice. Oddly enough, David ignores God and never actually gets around to making a choice; so the Lord makes the decision for him and sends pestilence upon Israel.

It appears unclear as to why David committed a crime, but why shouldn’t God have punished individual offenders instead of killing an army of innocent bystanders? Atrocities such as this appear outrageous enough when perpetrated by Attila the Hun, Hitler or Pol Pot, but when it comes from a, supposedly, loving God, it should make one wonder if this represents a Devil instead of a God.

God Slaughters Blacks

“And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots…” (II Chronicles 14:9)

So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled. (II Chronicles 14:12)

Comment

It appears that Black Christian Bible studies programs ignore these verses, for it says that the Lord God slaughtered over a million blacks.

The association of black with evil goes far back in Western Christian culture. The early Church fathers, Origen, Jerome, and Augustine of Hippo wrote about devils appearing as Ethiopians.

White racist groups (such as the Ku Klux Klan who think of themselves as opposite of black devils) see these Biblical verses as evidence to justify their beliefs. We still hear phrases such as “Prince of Darkness” or “Black magic” which link blackness with sin.

In the story of Ham and Japheth, the word “ham” has connotations of “hot” and “dark” in Semitic languages. To the ancient Israelites, as well as some modern Jews and Christians, the “children of Ham” had dark skin and lived in eastern Africa. Thus they see the “Curse of Ham” as a link with black skin and sexual license.

God’s Threat To Kill

“And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt: And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.” (Exodus 11:4-5)

Comment

After reading such verses, it would become apparent, even to a child, that this does not describe the actions of a loving Being. Anyone who reconciles the killing of innocent children with an intelligent and loving Creator can only come from great ignorance under the addiction of blind faith.

“Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize humankind.”

–Thomas Paine

Godly Head Wounds

“But God shall wound the head of his enemies, and the hairy scalp of such a one as goeth on still in his trespasses. The Lord said, I will bring again from Bashan, I will bring my people again from the depths of the sea: That thy foot may be dipped in the blood of thine enemies, and the tongue of thy dogs in the same.” (Psalms 68:21-23)

Comment

If anyone believes these sadistic words come from God, then it might serve prudence to stay away from such people. For anyone who holds to such beliefs may very well do the same to others.

Godly Mass Murder

“And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.” (I Samuel 6:19)

Comment

Here we have just one more instance of God performing mass murder, a sadistic killer far worse than Hitler, Attila the Hun or Pol Pot.

These verses should insult the intelligence of any person who thinks that God possesses a loving nature.

One should not dismiss the Old Testament’s repeated demand for the vilest atrocities as something peculiar to the early Hebrews. Even today, our most atrocious wars, terrorism and hate crimes occur around the world based on ancient religious beliefs, many of them coming directly from verses in the Old and New Testament.

Kill All Unbelievers

“And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God…” (Deuteronomy 13: 5)

“If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;” (Deuteronomy 13: 6)

“Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.” (Deuteronomy 13:8-9)

“Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.” (Deuteronomy 13:15)

Comment

These severe laws commanded the members of the Hebrew religion to murder even their own children if they did not worship Yahweh (God).

These Bible words can justify, to a fanatical fundamentalist believer, the killing of friends or family simply because they may fail to change their beliefs.

Why anyone today would accept these words, much less allow them to exist in a sacred book goes against the nature of any tolerant and loving people.

Kill Man, Woman, Infant

“Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.” (I Samuel 15:2-3)

Comment

No matter how one can justify possible crimes from adults, suckling infants have no means of acting out crimes. And what evil against God could the animals have possibly performed? Only an evil entity could kill innocent infants and animals, no matter what their parents and owners may have done.

King David’s Holocaust

“And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under the axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.” (II Samuel 12:31)

Comment

From the sacred scripts from the Bible we learn that the great King David carried out atrocities that rivaled the cruel acts from the holocaust of World War II. If we condemn the Nazi’s for their atrocities, why should we not do the same for David’s bloodthirsty actions?

Moses’ Mass Murder

“Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD. Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.” (Numbers 31:16-18)

Comment

Moses commands the murder of approximately 100,000 young males and, roughly, 68,000 helpless women.

Consider women and children of your own family: No matter how sick they may lay, or how they may go against a religion, how would you feel if a man named Moses, claiming to speak for God, sent men into your house and hacked to pieces the women and male children? Also, how would you react if they spotted a female child, dragged her off with them to do as they please with her? Note that these innocent virgins served for their own sexual pleasures.

Midian, the land of the Midianites, did not reside in an area regarded as a natural enemy of Israel for centuries, and in fact lay hundreds of miles away from the Israelite encampment. Moses, himself, had lived in Midian as fugitive after committing his first murder. In short, Midian presented no threat to God’s “Chosen People.”

Nail His Head!

“Then Jael Heber’s wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.” (Judges 4:21)

Comment

In verse 16 the Israelites surprise Sisera’s army and that “there was not a man left,” except Sisera who deserts his army and flees, a deed punishable by court martial today. Sisera then goes to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber. Jael takes him in, hides him under a blanket, gives him milk to quench his thirst, and promises to stand guard at the door while he sleeps. Then Jael kills Sisera!

We see no telling of the slightest shame, but rather, Jael proudly flaunts her kill. The author of this piece of Scripture makes it clear that the passage represents a deed, not only as grand and heroic but also consistent with the will of God (see Judges 4:23).

Raping And Killing

“Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword. Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.” (Isaiah 13:15-16)

Comment

These verses foretold the deaths of the people of Babylon. Fortunately not everyone in Babylon (now modern Iraq) fell by the sword or had their children dashed to pieces or their wives raped (just another instance of errors in the Bible). How some people who believe in an infallible Bible can accept these verses as God inspired, or morally uplifting can only give evidence to the blinding nature of belief. For if we believe these words as God inspired, then the killing of children and the raping of wives must also come as an inspiration from the Supreme Being.

Shed The Blood

“And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made the man.” (Genesis 9:5-6)

Comment

Some anti-abortionists have used these words to justify the killing of abortionists. As such, these words helped inspire Michael Griffin to kill Doctor David Gunn on March 10, 1993.

Consider that the Bible never directly addresses abortion, much the less the condemnation of it. On the contrary, God himself has condoned, not only miscarriages, but has personally called for the killing of suckling infants and the bashing of children against the rocks.

(See Numbers 5:26-27, I Samuel 15:2-3, and Psalm 137:9)

Slaughter Of Innocents

“And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain.” (Deuteronomy 2:34)

“And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Hesbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city. But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities we took for a prey to ourselves.” (Deuteronomy 3:6-7)

Comment

Such words helped give justification to mediaeval Crusaders who slaughtered men, women and children along their way to Jerusalem and stole the spoils of the cities. Even today, many Christian military men use Scripture to justify their actions. If any soldier harbors doubt about killing his fellow humans, he need only consult a military chaplain or read the Bible to calm their worries. Even George Bush (the First), with Billy Graham beside him, proclaimed the Gulf War as “moral.” George Bush (the Second) continued in his father’s steps by killing thousands of Iraqi civilians in the Iraqi war. Such moral wars result in thousands of “utterly destroyed” innocent men, women and children.;

(For a few more examples [but not all] see also Deuteronomy 3:3, 7:2, 20:16-17 , 25:19; Joshua 6:21, 8:26, 10-28-40; Numbers 31:17-18; I Samuel 15:3; Isaiah 13:16; and Hosea 13:16)

Slay Old And Young

“And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and woman: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.” (Ezekiel 9:5-6)

Comment

These words, commanded by God, orders the slaying of not only women and the old, but of little children. These accounts of cold-blooded massacres occurred simply because people refused to accept Yahweh. These phrases should give warning to anyone who knows a person who believes every word in the Bible.

For what sense of moral reasoning should we allow ourselves to admire such Biblical verses?

The Survivors

“Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.” (Revelation 7:3-4)

“And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.” (Revelation 9:3-4)

“And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.” (Revelation 14:1)

“…the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins.” (Revelation 14:3-4)

Comment

Here we have the great future destruction where billions of people will die. Only 144,000 virgin Jews with a protective mark on their heads will survive. (I suppose the ‘Jews for Jesus’ cult would serve as the leading candidates.)

How many believers realize that this means the death of everyone on earth but a few virgin Jews? And this includes the destruction of all Christians! (Of course the alleged Jesus, a virgin Jew, who claimed only a few would enter heaven would agree with this).

Note: Of course faithful Christians cannot accept the 144,000 figure so they must either become atheists, ignore these verses, reject Revelation as just dream nonsense, or try to revise its meaning to something they can accept. Some try to get creative by claiming that Rev. 7:-9,“…a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues…,” means an unlimited number will enter heaven. Not so. The “all” in this verse speaks about all the tribes of Israel (the Jews) scattered around the nations of the world. The verse comes right after listing the tribes in Rev. 7:1-8. And man doesn’t name the number but rather the angel who speaks in John’s dream. And John reports the number, three times, in chapters 7 and 14, as shown above. Sorry Christians but all of you will have to suffer with all the atheists and unbelievers in God’s hell. Welcome to the club!

Beware of a future “Armageddon” caused by religious people. Belief in self-fulfilling prophesies creates self-fulfilling acts.

Utter Destruction, 1

“And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.” (Joshua 6:21)

Comment

These “God inspired” words give not a hint of mercy to innocent slaughtered women, children or the old.

After Moses and Aaron died, Joshua assumed command and the Israelites entered Jericho. Note that in the same siege, “all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the treasury of the Lord” (Joshua 6:19)

In the battle of Ai, the Bible tells that twelve thousand, the whole population of Ai, got slaughtered. (Josh. 8:25)

Note that many invaders throughout history have used such words as justification for wars and looting.

Utter Destruction, 2

“Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree: And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.” (Deuteronomy 12:2-3)

Comment

The Lord, here commands the destruction of all the places where people worship other gods. There appears not a shred of religious tolerance here!

“I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own– a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotism.”

–Albert Einstein

(For other examples of utter destructions, see Numbers 21:2; Deuteronomy 3:6-7, 7:2, 13:15, 20:17, Judges 21:11, II Chronicles 20:23; I Kings 20-42; Isaiah 11:15, 15:3, 9, 18; Jeremiah 12:17, 25-9, 50;21, 26, 51:3; Daniel 11;44; Amos 9:8 )

Washing Feet In Blood

“The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance. He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.” (Psalms 58:10)

Comment

How many “good” Christians realize that such a verse appears in the Bible? Of course most preachers keep these bloodthirsty words away from their congregations, and the few Christians who do come across these verses, re-interpret them for their own purposes, not realizing the impact these words can have on others. Unfortunately the few that take these verses literally can justify atrocities against anyone who they wish to define as “wicked.”
