Or I should say, the Christian religion, since mostly we hear more protests from those of this faith than any other, against gays and their equal right to demonstrate their love for each other, or what would be the ultimate expression of their love: marriage.
Why does Christianity protest so adamantly that homosexuality is an abomination to God and the institution of marriage (and all the privileges it brings with it), be a right restricted to one man and one woman only? Why is this when so many other verses that very clearly outline for us God’s will in the bible, (which are also supposedly divinely inspired by God), are ignored?
Does it seem that this religion goes through its own holy book and picks and chooses which verses to highlight, emphasize, write sermons and preach about, etc. Below I have listed some verses in the bible taken from various translations. Note, if the bible is the untainted, uninfluenced by human wishes, perfect Word of God, why is only one of the verses pasted below, taken seriously? Why are we not seeing Christians silencing their women, forcing their women not to teach or have authority over men? Why do we not have slaves? Why are we not stoning rape victims who don’t cry out, or our children who are stubbornly insolent? If this holy book is God inspired, God telling us puny humans his mind, why are we puny humans thinking we have the wisdom to sift through God’s rulebook, per se, and carefully select which rules we want to take seriously and follow, punishing or laying restrictions upon those we disagree with or disapprove of and using these certain verses in the bible as justification, while ignoring completely other rules just as strongly worded, that God also thought important enough to share with us?
Does the church have a very human agenda? Does it use this book the bible as justification to enforce a certain kind of lifestyle it decides is wholesome and appropriate and acceptable, to then enforce upon society? Shove down peoples’ throats, even those others who do not follow or believe? What has Christianity to do with marriage? If atheists are allowed to marry, why not gays? Why does the church select what the bible says about homosexuality as relevant, while ignoring what it says about how killing an unborn fetus isn’t murder?
Verses from the bible. It’s easy to see which one of these verses Christianity recognizes as important and which ones it takes very lightly, or does not recognize at all. Was God just having a bad day when he commanded these things?
1 Corinthians 14: 34: Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 35: And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
1 Timothy 2:12: But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. (So much for YOU, Sarah Palin!)
Lev. 20:13, “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them”
Lev 25: 44-46 NLT: However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way.
Exodus 21:2-6 NLT If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him. If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. But the slave may plainly declare, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.’ If he does this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever
Exodus 21:20-21 NAB When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property.
Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.
(Sorry but um…what sadist would force a rape victim marry her rapist?)
Deuteronomy 22:23-24 NAB If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife.
Deuteronomy 21:18-21 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and allIsrael shall hear, and fear.
Leviticus 26:29 And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.
Psalm 137:9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
Exodus 21:22 says: “If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.” Interesting to note that Exodus is clear that a murderer receives capital punishment, but killing a fetus is not punished with death.)
